Implant and Other Types of Dentures

Dental implants are an innovative solution to replacing lost teeth, and they involve small, biocompatible titanium posts that are inserted directly into your jaw bone. At Lone Star Dental Care, Dr. Vahadi offers a number of dental implant-supported restorations, including a variety of implant-retained dentures. With the support of two or more implant posts, your denture or dentures will look, feel, and function more like healthy, natural teeth.
Once you are accustomed to the feel of your implant dentures, the muscles, nerves, and ligaments of your mouth will learn to work in new ways, ultimately improving the functionality of your teeth. Our implant dentures in Frisco are customized to fit the natural look of your face and smile. Dentures also help support the facial skeleton as well as the soft tissues of the lips, cheeks, and jaw bone.

Implant Denture Process

Dentures are customized specifically for the patient who is receiving them. First, an impression is made of the alveolar ridges (the small protuberance that sits just behind the upper front teeth) on the top and bottom of your mouth. The dentist and lab technician will work together to re-create a natural-looking smile that will work best for you. Once the results are finalized, you’ll receive the dentures, and you will be able to make sure that they are functioning and fitting properly. Three common types of dentures include:

Snap-In Implant Dentures

Snap-in implant dentures are “snapped” onto connective abutments which are attached to the dental implant posts. This type of denture is removable and easy to clean. Snap-in implant dentures tend to be more cost-effective than non-removable options and may be ideal for patients who have had dentures for many years.

Screw-In Implant Dentures

Screw-in implant dentures are not removable by the patient, but are instead “screwed” to the implant posts for a more secure and permanent solution. Screw-in dentures—or hybrid dentures—closely mimic healthy, natural, and permanent teeth functionality. The multiple secure anchor points provide you with stability while eating in addition to helping preserve your oral functionality and appearance. The implanted-support denture uses four or more implants in your lower jaw that has dentures affixed to the anchors with screws. These dentures are exceptionally secure and even though they cannot be removed, they are still remarkably easy to clean and maintain.

Removable Dentures

Removable implant dentures, also known as overdentures, combine the benefits of dental implants with the convenience of conventional removable dentures. Overdentures may require fewer implant posts than other implant denture options, and because they can be removed, they are easy to keep clean.

Caring for Your Implant Dentures

You should always clean your dentures whether they are removable or not. If they are removable, you need to take them out at night and clean both the dentures and the attachment in your mouth. If you have a bar-retained denture, it’s important that the clip or other attachments are replaced every 6 to 12 months as to keep the plastic material from wearing out completely.
