Fighting Gum Disease with Periodontal Maintenance
Even when gum disease isn’t present, it is important to attend regular preventive visits (i.e., checkups and cleanings) to keep your smile healthy and beautiful. When gingivitis or gum disease is present, however, your routine visits will revolve around a schedule of periodontal maintenance to prevent the disease from growing worse. For advanced periodontal disease, Dr. Vahadi performs scaling and root planing. In very advanced cases, we may recommend LANAP followed by PerioProtect trays. If LANAP is not an option, we will perform scaling and root planing followed by PerioProtect trays.
Ongoing Periodontal Maintenance
Scaling and Root Planing
Scaling and root planing, also referred to as a periodontal cleaning, is a more involved form of regular dental cleaning (or prophylaxis). Unlike regular dental cleanings, scaling and root planing involve carefully accessing and removing bacteria from your roots underneath your gums. Local anesthesia may be applied before the procedure to minimize discomfort, and you may require more than one visit to complete the process.
LANAP, or laser-assisted new attachment protocol, allows Dr. Vahadi to perform complex periodontal treatment with the use of advanced laser technology. Unlike traditional periodontal surgery, which may require a scalpel and the need for sutures afterwards, LANAP utilizes an advanced, soft-tissue diode laser to eliminate periodontal infection and disease in a quicker, more comfortable, and more effective method.
To help further fight the progression of gingivitis and gum disease, Dr. Vahadi often suggests anti-bacterial treatment with PerioProtect®. The treatment involves the application of effective anti-bacterial medicine using custom-designed trays. The trays help deliver the medicine to the periodontal pockets formed by gingivitis and gum recession, fighting off the harmful microbes that lead to gum inflammation and disease.
